Apollo - Healthcare Design System

A seamless AI integrated data-sharing and health monitoring system focused on preventive healthcare in the Nordic regions. It aims to leverage core values such as medical integrity, community and empowerment.

Project details

Instructed by - Umeå Institute of Design
Project team - Hao Zheng & Kimberley Beauprez
Collaborators - Nordic Council of Ministers
Project Duration - 6 weeks

Project Background

This project is part of an initiative focused on "Healthcare and Care through Distance-Spanning Solutions." It aims to enhance access to quality healthcare and social services for everyone in the Nordic region, no matter where they reside. The goal is to foster development and growth across the entire country, extending beyond the major urban areas.

My role

- Executed comprehensive secondary and primary research
- Conducted in-depth user interviews
- Initiated ideation processes
- Developed service design frameworks.
- Designed and refined UX/UI components

How might we design and implement distance-spanning healthcare solutions to ensure all residents in the Nordic region, regardless of location, have equal access to quality healthcare and social services, promoting preventive healthcare ?

Case study : Sleep

Focused on 'sleep' as a significant design opportunity due to its widespread, yet often overlooked, impact in daily life.

Highlighted the severe health risks associated with chronic poor sleep, including memory loss, heart disease, fluctuating body weight, weakened immune systems, and high blood pressure.

Utilized 'sleep' as a case study to effectively illustrate the core values identified through field research on preventive healthcare.

Aimed to explore and design system that enhances everyday health and well-being by addressing sleep quality.
Apollo is a seamless AI integrated data-sharing and health monitoring system focused on preventive healthcare in the Nordic regions. It aims to embrace core values such as medical integrity, community and empowerment. It comprises of the Polo (smart token) and mat. This design solution aims to seek seamless/invisible health monitoring experience for the end users.

System design

Data Integrity : Inhabitants

Polo serves as a tangible artifact that emphasizes the user's conscious decision to grant or give consent to the interface to access their health data. It is a key that connects to an individual's medical ID and sleeping data to ensure medical integrity. It adds another conscious layer for the inhabitants to rethink about sharing personal health data.

Data Integrity : Healthcare providers

Through the interface, the healthcare provider seeks permission of the inhabitant to gain access to the former's sleep data to act on.

The inhabitant accepts the healthcare provider's request to access the health data recorded using Polo & the mat.

On the healthcare provider's side of the interface, the profile of the inhabitant becomes active (green tick & profile image visible).

An active profile allows the healthcare provider to view details of the health or sleep data.

Sense of community : Healthcare providers

The healthcare providers play a role of a mentor through an inhabitant's healthcare journey. They provide group consultations within the community rather than one-to-one sessions. Also, if an inhabitant shows symptoms of poor sleep, the healthcare provider raises concern over to the community to communicate or seek help with themselves. In special cases, they suggest professional suggestions by organizing physical or digital meet-ups to the specific group facing unhealthy sleep patterns.

Empowerment in Preventive Healthcare : Inhabitants & Healthcare Provider.

Apollo enables 'gapless health monitoring' both during the day & night time. It provides inhabitants with their health data, alerts them in case of abnormalities and connects them to the healthcare providers or the community. It allows the inhabitant to take charge of the decisions they make concerning their health journey or treatment plans.

The AI generated health reports of the inhabitants makes the work of healthcare providers less straining. It enables them to cater to more patients, make efficient examinations of the health data and take on a passive role as a mentor.

Empowerment in Preventive Healthcare : AI.

In this ecosystem, The AI acts as a mediator to the inhabitants and the Healthcare providers. It evaluates the possibility of potential abnormalities or health risks by deciphering the collected sleep data of the inhabitants and accordingly provides insights that serve as references to the healthcare provider.
