Overview

An AI integrated data-sharing and health monitoring system focused on preventive healthcare in the Nordic regions. It aims to leverage core values such as medical integrity, community and empowerment.

Background

This project is part of an initiative focused on "Healthcare and Care through Distance-Spanning Solutions." It aims to enhance access to quality healthcare and social services for everyone in the Nordic region, no matter where they reside. The goal is to foster development and growth across the entire country, extending beyond the major urban areas.

Observed Challenges

01

The inhabitants lived around 60-100 km away from the nearest hospital, which
makes medical care inaccessible

02

The majority of the population are aged between 45-75 years old, which prevents them from getting access to medical system during emergency

03

The healthcare system in rural areas has failed to shift focus from sick care to preventive healthcare

Redefine Medical Vision
In 2030

In this project, our partners entrusted us with the task of defining a medical vision for the Nordic regions by 2030. We set out to identify and integrate a series of core values that would really echo this vision.

Vision : The Nordic Region is the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. Social care & healthcare services are integrated, and innovations developed in different regions are used across the Nordics. We aim to redefine the roles of inhabitants, healthcare providers & the community in the healthcare system.

Case Study: Sleep Deprivation

Sleep is vital to our overall health and well-being. This project takes a close look at sleep deprivation to emphasize how crucial it is to gather data continuously, both day and night. This ongoing monitoring is key to proactive, preventive healthcare that helps us stay healthy and thrive.

Current Challenges

The current challenges with sleeping data in Northern Sweden are listed below

How might we restructure the current sleeping data system to sustain a person's medical integrity in distance spanning healthcare by leveraging the strengths of the communities
in Northern Sweden?

System Design

The system overview summarize the entire design of sleeping data system from data gathering, AI analyzing to empowering preventive healthcare system within communities.

Fundamental Values Driving the Final Concept

01. Data Integrity

Data integrity ensures that personal sleep health data is treated with the highest level of care and privacy. This involves obtaining clear and explicit consent before the data is shared, used for early diagnosis, or pooled for community benefits. It's crucial to maintain the accuracy, consistency, and trustworthiness of the data throughout its lifecycle, ensuring it is used strictly according to the individual's consent.

For Inhabitants

Una serves as a tangible artifact that emphasizes the user's conscious decision to grant or give consent to the interface to access their health data. It is a key that connects to an individual's medical ID and sleeping data to ensure medical integrity. It adds another conscious layer for the inhabitants
to rethink about sharing personal health data.

For Healthcare Providers

Healthcare provider seeks the permission from individual inhabitants to get access to their sleeping data in order to act on it later.

The inhabitant accepts the healthcare provider's request to access the health
data recorded using Una and the mat. On the healthcare provider's side of the interface, the profile of the inhabitant becomes active (green tick & profile
image visible). An active profile allows the healthcare provider to view details
of the health or sleep data.

02. Sense of Community

The envisioned Nordic community is a dynamic collection of individuals united by the goal of enhancing sleep quality. We encourage interaction, teamwork, and support to nurture healthy sleep habits. Key to deepening our community bond is our members’ willingness to embrace innovative solutions, their strong camaraderie, and the invaluable guidance from healthcare providers acting as mentors. This collective effort underpins our commitment to improving sleep health.

For Inhabitants

Apollo aims to leverage the existing sense of community within the Nordic region. The interface helps inhabitants -

01

Enables connecting with each other to consult & discuss symptoms, methods of treatment and share their progress with
one another.

02

The community feature categorizes inhabitants to groups based on similar interests, hobbies or sleep data.

03

It recommends inhabitants to attend events for medical guidance by healthcare providers in groups.

For Healthcare Providers

The healthcare providers play a role of a mentor through an inhabitant's healthcare journey. They provide group consultations within the community rather than one-to-one sessions. Also, if an inhabitant shows symptoms of poor sleep, the healthcare provider raises concern over to the community to communicate or seek help with themselves. In special cases, they suggest professional suggestions by organizing physical or digital meet-ups to the specific group facing unhealthy sleep patterns.

03. Empowerment in Preventive Healthcare

We believe health shouldn’t only be valued in times of illness. That’s why we’re committed to proactive, preventive care in remote areas. By actively monitoring residents' health data and connecting them with healthcare providers early, we aim to tackle issues before they escalate, fostering a healthier future for all.

For Healthcare Providers

Users employ Una, a physical token that collects and stores health data, ensuring continuous monitoring throughout the day. They also use
Apollo mat, a bed sheet equipped with sensors,
for uninterrupted health monitoring during the night.

Apollo provides inhabitants with their health data, alerts them in case of abnormalities and connects them to the healthcare providers or the community.

The AI generated health reports of the inhabitants makes the work of healthcare providers less straining. It enables them to cater to more patients, make efficient examinations of the health data and take on a passive role as a mentor.

The role of AI

In this ecosystem, The AI acts as a mediator to the inhabitants and the Healthcare providers. It evaluates the possibility of potential abnormalities or health risks by deciphering the collected sleep data of the inhabitants and accordingly provides insights that serve as references to the healthcare provider.
